Characteristics of a Student

    काक चेष्टा, बको ध्यानं, स्वान निद्रा तथैव च ।
   अल्पहारी, गृहत्यागी, विद्यार्थी पञ्च लक्षणम् ॥

(This is the verse that I had learnt by heart when I was a child. Let's discuss this verse now).

  Yagya Kumar Niraula

Every student must have the knowledge of this verse. This verse is not just a couple of lines written in Sanskrit, but in itself is a guidance for the students.

In this verse, the qualities a student have been mentioned so that this phase of his/her life can be successful.

This verse says that trying to know everything like that of a crow, concentration and meditation like that of a heron, sleeping a thin sleep like that of a dog, consuming less food and renunciation of his/her home are the five characteristics/qualities/signs or symptoms of a student.

Let's understand the meaning of the verse. Just as a crow has a desire and curiosity to know everything, a student should also keep trying to know and learn something new. That is, a student should keep acquiring as much knowledge as possible. This is his/her first characteristic.

Talking about the second sign, it is said that a student should follow a heron. A heron has immense concentration and attention. Like the heron, a student should also do every task with a concentrated mind. The mind and brain of a student should always remain concentrated and his/her attention should remain only on his/her goal so that he/she can achieve success in it.

The third symptom states that a student should always be alert. That is why his/her sleep should be a thin sleep like that of a dog, which wakes up and becomes alert as soon as it hears even the slightest noise.

The fourth symptom is that a student should eat less food. Eating too much food causes laziness in the mind, due to which students may be unable to do their work with agility. That is why a student should eat food as per his/her requirement so that he/she can remain active.

Finally, the renunciation of home has been described as the fifth characteristic of a student. That means a student should stay away from his home. Sacrifice of home is necessary because the love and affection of family members and relatives become a hindrance in acquiring knowledge. Therefore, a student should stay away from these relations and concentrate only on his/her studies. These are the five characteristics of a student, which make him/her successful in his/her life.

Some Important Long Answer Type Questions With Their Answers :

1. What is iambic pentameter?

Iambic pentameter is a metrical pattern commonly used in traditional English poetry. It consists of lines that contain five pairs of syllables, known as metrical feet, with each pair consisting of one unstressed syllable followed by one stressed syllable. The term "iambic" refers to the specific type of metrical foot called an "iamb," which consists of an unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable.

In iambic pentameter, each line contains five iambs, resulting in a total of ten syllables. The stress pattern typically follows the natural emphasis of spoken English, with the stressed syllables providing a rhythmic pattern. This pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables creates a sense of regularity and musicality in the verse.

Many renowned poets, including William Shakespeare, John Donne, and Alexander Pope, extensively used iambic pentameter in their works. It has become a defining feature of traditional English poetry and is often associated with sonnets, blank verse, and heroic couplets.

2. How many types of meters are used in English poetry and what are they?

In English poetry, there are several types of meters commonly used to create rhythm and structure within a poem. Here are some of the most well-known types of meters:

Iambic meter:

This is the most common meter in English poetry. It consists of iambs, which are metrical feet made up of two syllables with the stress on the second syllable. For example, "da-DUM" (unstressed-stressed). An example line of iambic pentameter is "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?" (by William Shakespeare).

Trochaic meter:

This meter is the opposite of iambic meter. It consists of trochees, which are metrical feet made up of two syllables with the stress on the first syllable. For example, "DUM-da" (stressed-unstressed). An example line of trochaic tetrameter is "Tyger! Tyger! burning bright" (by William Blake).

Anapestic meter:

This meter consists of anapests, which are metrical feet made up of three syllables with the stress on the third syllable. For example, "da-da-DUM" (unstressed-unstressed-stressed). An example line of anapestic tetrameter is "And the sound of a voice that is still" (by Edgar Allan Poe).

Dactylic meter:

This meter consists of dactyls, which are metrical feet made up of three syllables with the stress on the first syllable. For example, "DUM-da-da" (stressed-unstressed-unstressed). Dactylic meter is less commonly used in English poetry but can be found in works like "The Charge of the Light Brigade" (by Alfred, Lord Tennyson).

Spondaic meter:

This meter consists of spondees, which are metrical feet made up of two syllables with equal stress on both syllables. For example, "DUM-DUM" (stressed-stressed). Spondaic meter is often used for emphasis or to create a particular rhythmic effect.

These are just a few examples of the many types of meters that can be found in English poetry. Poets often use a combination of these meters and may vary the meter within a poem to create different effects and evoke different emotions.

3. What is metrical feet in English poetry?

In English poetry, a metrical foot is a basic unit of stressed and unstressed syllables that form the underlying rhythm of a line. It helps determine the meter or the pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in a line of poetry. Each metrical foot consists of a certain number of syllables and a specific arrangement of stressed and unstressed accents.

Here are the most common types of metrical feet in English poetry:

Iamb:

This foot consists of two syllables, with the first syllable unstressed and the second syllable stressed. It is represented as "da-DUM" in notation. For example, the word "unite" is an iambic foot because it is pronounced as "u-NITE."

Trochee:

This foot consists of two syllables, with the first syllable stressed and the second syllable unstressed. It is represented as "DUM-da" in notation. For example, the word "happy" is a trochaic foot because it is pronounced as "HAP-py."

Anapest:

This foot consists of three syllables, with the first two syllables unstressed and the third syllable stressed. It is represented as "da-da-DUM" in notation. For example, the word "understand" is an anapestic foot because it is pronounced as "un-der-STAND."

Dactyl:

This foot consists of three syllables, with the first syllable stressed and the next two syllables unstressed. It is represented as "DUM-da-da" in notation. For example, the word "elephant" is a dactylic foot because it is pronounced as "EL-e-phant."

Spondee:

This foot consists of two syllables, both of which are stressed. It is represented as "DUM-DUM" in notation. For example, the word "heartbeat" is a spondaic foot because it is pronounced as "HEART-beat."

These metrical feet can be combined to create different patterns and meters, such as iambic pentameter (five iambs per line) or trochaic tetrameter (four trochees per line). Poets use these metrical feet and their patterns to establish the rhythm and musicality of their poetry.

Yogmaya had a two-pronged agenda, not just one," explained Manamaya. "Her first target was the cultural and religious oppression of the time. Her second object was our ruler, the Prime Minister, who along with his generals allowed corruption and inequality to prevail. Our master, Shakti Yogmaya, showed us how these two evils are intertwined, and she feared neither."

Yogamaya launched a brilliant and a daring political campaign from her base in the hills of East Nepal. It took place during the 1930s, and ended in 1940 with her death, along with sixty eight of her followers who one by one followed her into the thundering current of the Arun River. After leading a campaign for reform and justice, Yogmaya finally confronted the ruler with an ultimatum: "If you do not grant us justice, we will die," she declared. Juddha Shamsher responded by sending his army to round up the protesters.

The tragedy that resulted remains a stain on the government. The Nepalese authorities covered up the episode and banned all mention of her. Her campaign was thoroughly expunged from the nation's historical record and almost lost to its political consciousness. But the powerful verses composed by Yogmaya, the hazurbani, survived. Looking at a geographical map of the Earth, you'd be forgiven for thinking that the continents end where the land meets the sea. However, most continents extend much further beneath the ocean in an extended perimeter called the continental shelf.

Around the British Isles, for instance, continental shelf seas cover a total area that is several times bigger than that of the UK. Indeed, these underwater terraces account for around 7% of the world's oceans. These shallow regions feature a varied seascape that includes canyons and channels, and are typically home to a rich biodiversity. Taken together, the ocean's shelf areas average approximately 200 ft. deep, making them easily penetrated by sunlight and home to a vast ecology of marine life.

Researchers estimate that about 15% of the ocean's plant growth occurs in shelf areas. The 'shelf break', meanwhile, is the steep slope where the continental shelf ends and the abyssal deep' begins, which has been described as the 'desert of the sea'.

The average width of continental shelves is said to be about 40 miles.

At 932 miles wide, the Siberian shelf in the Arctic Ocean is the largest of them all. Shelves are also found in the South China Sea, the North Sea and the Persian Gulf. By contrast, some geographical areas, such as the coast of Chile and the west coast of Sumatra, do not have a continental shelf because they lie in zones where tectonic plates meet.

3.1 Fill in the blanks with correct information from the text. (5x1=5)

I. The continental shelf around the British Isles is ..... than the UK.

II. The continental shelf around the British Isles covers world's oceans.

V. Abyssal deep has been known as ..... .

3.2 Answer the following questions.(5x1=5)

I. Where do the continents end?

II. What is meant by the shelf break'?

III. Which is the largest continental shelf?

IV. Why does the west coast of Sumatra not have the continental shelf?

V. What makes the ocean's shelf areas a residence to a vast ecology of marine life?

What is a sonnet?

A sonnet is a type of poem that traditionally consists of 14 lines written in iambic pentameter, with a specific rhyme scheme and structure.

Iambic pentameter is a form of poetic meter that consists of five metrical feet, or iambs, per line. An iamb is a metrical foot that consists of two syllables, with the first syllable being unstressed and the second syllable being stressed. In iambic pentameter, each line has ten syllables and follows the pattern of five iambs, with the stress falling on the second syllable of each iamb. This rhythmic pattern creates a sense of regularity and a natural cadence, and it is commonly used in English poetry, especially in Shakespeare's plays and sonnets.

The sonnet form originated in Italy in the 13th century and was popularized by poets such as Petrarch and Dante. In English literature, the sonnet form was widely used during the Renaissance period, particularly by Shakespeare and other Elizabethan poets.

The two most common forms of sonnets are the Italian or Petrarchan sonnet and the English or Shakespearean sonnet.

The Petrarchan sonnet is divided into two parts: an octave (eight lines) and a sestet (six lines). The octave typically follows an ABBAABBA rhyme scheme, while the sestet can follow a variety of rhyme schemes, such as CDECDE or CDCDCD.

The Shakespearean sonnet, on the other hand, is divided into three quatrains (four lines each) and a final couplet (two lines). The rhyme scheme of a Shakespearean sonnet is typically ABAB CDCD EFEF GG.

Both types of sonnets traditionally explore themes of love, beauty, and mortality, but they can also be used to address other topics, such as politics, nature, or religion.
