INTRODUCTION :
Sunbarshi Secondary School is located in ward No. 5 of Ratuwamai municipality in the district of Morang, Province No.1 in the eastern part of Nepal. It was established on the 28th of Bhadra, 2032 B.S. (13th Sept.1975 A.D.). Mr. Padam Bahadur Katwal is the founder of this school. Formerly it was named as "Shree Dipendra Primary School". It was its first name. Later, it was renamed as "Shree Sunbarshi Primary School". In the field of education, it has come a long way since its establishment in 2032 B.S. (1975 A.D.).
The motive of the school has always been quality education.
During the successful 47 years of operations, it has produced a lot of outstanding students who have been able to gain outstanding achievement in Nepal as well as in foreign countries.
We have proved ourselves to be the best by the results that we have shown in the years of serving the nation.
We are glad to say that each and every student who has passed the SLC/SEE and the Plus Two (now grade 12) examinations from this school till this date feels proud to be called as the product of Sunbarshi Secondary School.

परिचय:
श्री सुनवर्षी माध्यमिक विद्यालय नेपालको पूर्वी भागमा रहेको प्रदेश नम्बर १अन्तरगत मोरङ जिल्लाको रतुवामाई नगरपालिका वडा नम्बर ५ मा अवस्थित छ। यसको स्थापना २०३२ भाद्र २८ गते भएको थियो। श्री पदमबहादुर कटवाल यस विद्यालयका संस्थापक हुनुहुन्छ। पहिले यस विद्यालयलाई "श्री दीपेन्द्र प्राथमिक विद्यालय" भनिन्थ्यो। यो यसको पहिलो नाम थियो। पछि, "श्री सुनवर्षी प्राथमिक विद्यालय" का नामले यसको पुनर्नामाकरण गरियो। वि.सं. २०३२ मा स्थापना भएदेखि नै शिक्षाको क्षेत्रमा यस विद्यालयले निकै लामो यात्रा तय गरेको छ ।
विद्यालयको उद्देश्य सधैं गुणस्तरीय शिक्षा रहीआएको छ।
विद्यालय सञ्चालनका सफल ४७ वर्षमा यसले धेरै उत्कृष्ट विद्यार्थीहरू उत्पादन गरेको छ जसले नेपालका साथै विदेशमा पनि उत्कृष्ट उपलब्धि हासिल गर्न सफल भएका छन्।

(क) भौगोलिक अवस्थिति
नेपालका ७ प्रदेश र ७७ जिल्ला अन्तर्गत यस विद्यालयको अवस्थितिको बारेमा उल्लेख गर्दा देशको पूर्वी भागमा पर्ने १ नं. प्रदेशका १४ वटा जिल्लाहरूमध्येको मोरङ जिल्लामा पर्दछ । यो जिल्लाको भूगोल हेर्दा पूर्वमा मावा तथा रतुवा खोला, पश्चिममा बुढी खोला, दक्षिणमा भारतको सिमाना (दशगजा) र उत्तरमा चुरे पहाडको माथिल्लो भूभागसम्म फैलिएको छ । यो जिल्ला शिक्षा, स्वास्थ्य, उद्योग, यातायात, सञ्चार तथा जनविकासको मार्गमा निकै अगाडी बढेको छ । जिल्लाका १ महानगरपालिका, ८ नगरपालिका र ८ गाउँपालिकाहरूमध्ये रतुवामाई नगरपालिका सुगम भित्रको दुर्गम नगरपालिका नै मानिन्छ जो जिल्ला सदरमुकामदेखि करिब ३० कि.मि. पूर्वमा पर्दछ ।
यस नगरपालिकाको पूर्वमा मावा तथा रतुवा खोला, पश्चिममा सुनवर्षी नगरपालिका, उत्तरमा उर्लाबारी नगरपालिका र दक्षिणमा छिमेकी राष्ट्र भारतसम्म फैलिएको छ । यसै नगरपालिकाको वडा नं. ५ मा अवस्थित छ हाम्रो विद्यालय, श्री सुनवर्षी मा.वि. । यो विद्यालय वि.सं. २०३२ सालमा स्थापना भएको हो । यो विद्यालय रतुवामाइ नगरपालिकाको वडा नं. ५, ६ र ८ को त्रिवेणी बनी उल्लुघुटु चोकमा अवस्थित छ । जिल्ला सदरमुकाम पुग्नको लागि दुईवटा बाटोहरू भएर यहाँबाट जान सकिन्छ । यस विद्यालयबाट करिव दुई कि.मि. पूर्वमा रहेको दाम्राभिट्टा बजार (जुन रतुवामाई न.पा. को ८ नं. वडामा पर्छ ) बाट गाडी चढी उर्लाबारी, इटहरी हुँदै बिराटनगर पुग्न सकिन्छ । यो बाटो बाह्रै महिना प्रयोग गर्न सकिन्छ भने अर्को बाटो उल्लुघुटु चोकबाट दैनिक बिहान बस चडेर झपडतल, रंगेली हुँदै सदरमुकाम पुग्न सकिन्छ । यद्यपि यो बाटोको उल्लघुटु–झपडतल खण्ड कच्ची भएको कारणले गर्दा हिउँदमा सहज भए पनि वर्षा याममा कठिनाई हुने गरेको छ । जिल्लाको भित्री कुनामा रहेर पनि यहाँका जनताको शैक्षिक भोक र प्यासलाई तृप्त पार्न अनवरत क्रियाशील छ यो विद्यालय । यस विद्यालयको ५०० मिटर पश्चिमतर्फ नगरपालिकाको यसै वडा भएर बक्राहा नदी बग्दछ, जसले यस क्षेत्रमा अत्याधिक धनजनको क्षति गराउने त छँदैछ यस विद्यालयमा अध्ययन गर्न आउनबाट नदीपारिका विद्यार्थीलाई वञ्चित गराउने र अनियमित गराउने गरेकोमा भने हाल आएर त्यस क्षेत्रमा बक्राहा नदीमाथि झोलुङ्गे पुल निर्माण भएकोले गर्दा केही सहज भएको छ ।

(ख) सामाजिक अवस्था
यस विद्यालय क्षेत्रभित्र वहुजातीय मानिस बसोबास गर्दछन् । बाहुन, क्षेत्री, राई, लिम्बू, तामाङ, कामी, दमाई, सतार, जोगी, नेवार जस्ता जाति यहाँका मुख्य वासिन्दा हुन् भने प्रायः अधिकांशले हिन्दु धर्मलाई नै अवलम्वन गर्दै आएका छन् । मौलिक संस्कृति बोकेको यहाँको समुदाय आफ्नो परम्परा, धर्म, संस्कृति, चाडवाड, रीतिरिवाज र मूल्य मान्यताको पालना गर्दछ । चाडवाड, विवाह, पूजा, व्रतवन्ध, बनभोज आदिमा आफन्त, साथीभाई तथा छरछिमेकी भेला भई रमाइलो गर्ने र एक आपसमा माया, सदभाव र सहयोग गर्नु यी समुदायको राम्रो विशेषता छ । मर्दापर्दा, आपतविपत, दुःख एवम् खाँचोमा एक आपसमा सहयोग र सहभागिता पनि यहाँ पाउन सकिन्छ ।
आम नेपाली समाजले अँंगालेको पेशा कृषिलाई नै यहाँका समुदायका मानिसले लिन बाध्य छन् भने हालका वर्षहरूमा मानिसहरूले बिस्तारै आधुनिक कृषि प्रणालीलाई अँंगाल्न थालेको पाइन्छ । यस समुदायभित्र थोरै मात्र मानिस सरकारी सेवा/प्राइभेट जागिरमा प्रवेश गरेका छन् । अधिकांश युवाको सङ्ख्या आर्थिक उपार्जनको लागि वैदेशिक रोजगारमा विदेशिएको पाइन्छ । नगण्य मानिसले स-साना व्यापार, पसल चलाएर बसेका छन् भने अलिक राम्रो आर्थिक अवस्था हुनेहरू आधुनिकिकरणको गति, शहरीकरणको सुविधा र प्रलोभनमा शहर बजार क्षेत्रतिरै प्रवेश गरेका छन् । उच्च योग्यता हासिल गरेका शिक्षित व्यक्तिहरू पनि शहर केन्द्रित नै देखिन्छन् । यी सम्पूर्ण कारणहरूले गर्दा विद्यालय विकासको लागि सहभागी बनेर तन, मन, र धनले जोड दिई विद्यालयको भौतिक, आर्थिक, शैक्षिक तथा सामाजिक व्यवस्थापनमा देन दिने व्यक्तिको पनि साह्रै अभाव देखिन्छ ।
अघिल्लो पुस्तालाई हेर्दा शिक्षाको क्षेत्रमा पछाडी परेको भए पनि यो समुदायले वर्तमानमा शिक्षाको महत्वलाई बुझेकै देखिन्छ । विद्यालय क्षेत्र भित्रका विद्यालय उमेर समूहका केटाकेटी विद्यालय भर्ना भएकै देखिन्छन् । दलित, जनजाति तथा आदिवासीका (त्यसमा पनि सन्थाल जातिका बालवालिकाहरूमा विद्यालय भर्ना नहुने र बीचैमा विद्यालय छोड्ने प्रवृत्ति देखिन्छ । समुदायमा महिलाभन्दा पुरुष बढी साक्षर र शिक्षित देखिन्छन् तर तर विद्यालयमा छात्रभन्दा छात्राको सङ्ख्या बढी देखिन्छ । समुदायका मानिसहरूमध्ये लगभग ७५% साक्षर छन् भने उच्च शिक्षा आर्जन गर्नेको सङ्ख्या पनि दिन प्रतिदिन बढ्दो छ । घरका छोरा मात्र नभएर प्रायः सम्पूर्ण छोरी र अध्ययनरत भए बुहारी पनि +२ र विश्वविद्यालय गएका देखिन्छन् । यस विद्यालय सेवा क्षेत्र भित्रका बस्ती पनि धेरै नै छन् जसमा मुख्यतया सीतानगर, कसेनी, मिलडाँडो, कोइलीडाँगी, शान्तिपुर, दाम्राभिट्टा, लेटी, गोविन्दपुर आदि हुन् ।
(ग) आर्थिक अवस्था
विद्यालय क्षेत्र भित्रका मानिसहरूको आर्थिक अवस्थाको कुरा गर्ने हो भने निम्नवर्गीय परिवारको सङ्ख्या निकै छ । यिनीको मुख्य आयआर्जनको स्रोत नै परम्परागत कृषि तथा पशुपालन हो । त्यसमा पनि औसतमा करिब सबैको १ देखि १.५ बिगाहा जग्गा जमिन जसले वर्षै भरिको अन्य खर्च र अहिलेको समयको जीवनशैली त कल्पनै नगरौं हातमुख जोड्नलाई समेत मुस्किल पर्ने गरेको देखिन्छ । दैनिक ज्यालादारी गरेर जीवन निर्वाह गर्नेको सङ्ख्या पनि प्रसस्तै छ । साँच्चै भन्ने हो भने कतिपय अभिभावकहरूलाई त नानी बाबुका कापी, कलम, पोशाक र अन्य स्टेशनरी किन्ने पैसाको पनि अभाव नै देखिन्छ । मध्यम वर्गीय परिवार औसत रूपमा छन् भने उच्च आर्थिक हैसियतका मान्छे बिरलै पाइन्छन् । केही भएका पनि शहर तिरै पलायन भएका छन् । वैदेशिक रोजगारमा गएकाहरूबाट केही रेमिटेन्स समुदायका धेरै परिवारमा भित्रिँदै गरेकोले वर्तमानमा केही आर्थिक सहजता भए जस्तो समुदायमा पाइन्छ । गाउँघरमा अन्य स्वरोजगारमूलक कार्यक्रम भएको पनि पाइँदैन । यसरी हेर्दा र विश्लेषण गर्दा यो समुदाय आर्थिक जर्जरताको पराकाष्ठामा नै रहेको छ भन्दा अत्युक्ति नहोला । त्यसर्थ मन हुँदाहुँदै पनि यहाँको समुदाय विद्यालयको खाँचो टर्ने गरी पर्याप्त आर्थिक सहयोग र दान गर्न सक्ने अवस्थामा छैनन् । त्यसो त विद्यालय स्थापना गराउँदादेखि नै प्रा.वि. हुँदै नि.मा.वि. र मा.वि. बनाउँदासम्म आर्थिक संकलनमा समुदाय यथासक्दो रूपमा नझुकेको र नचुकेको पनि इतिहासले देखाउँछ तर पनि वर्तमानमा विद्यालयले भोग्नु पर्ने सम्पूर्ण आर्थिक चुनौतिलाई सामना गर्न स्थानीय रूपबाट मात्रै गाह्रै पर्ला ।
(घ) ऐतिहासिक अवस्था
विद्यालय रहेको यो डाँडो पहिले झोडा नै थियो र रूख जङ्गलले ढाकेको थियो । पछि उक्त जंगल फडाँनी भएर यस डाँडोको नाम ‘उल्लुघुटु’ रहन गएको हो । यस ठाउँको नाम ‘उल्लुघुटु’ कसरी रह्यो भन्ने बारेमा निम्न दुई किम्वदन्तीहरू पाइन्छन् ।
१. पहिला यो डाँडो आँपको बगैंचाले भरिएको थियो । सन्थाल भाषामा आँपलाई ‘उल’ भनिन्छ । त्यस बेला यहाँ सन्थालको बस्ती थियो । तिनीहरू मध्येका मुखियाको नाम ‘गुटु’ थियो । अर्थात् आँपको बगैँचा भएको गाउँको मुखिया ‘गुटु’ भएकाले यी दुबै शब्दहरू (‘उल’ र गुटु’) को मिश्रणबाट यस ठाउँको नाम ‘उलगुटु’ हुँदै अपभ्रंश भएर ‘उल्लुघुटु’ रहन गएको एक खाले ऐतिहासिक किम्वदन्ती रहन गएको पाइन्छ ।
२. अर्को किम्वदन्ती अनुसार ‘उल’ को अर्थ सतार भाषामा आँप नै हो र ‘घुटु’ को अर्थ ‘डाँडो’ भन्ने मानिन्छ । तर्सथ आँप बगैंचा भएको डाँडो भएकोले यस ठाउँको नाम यहाँका आदिवासी सन्थालहरूले ‘उल्लुघुटु’ राखेका हुन् र त्यही नाम जनजिब्रोमा अभ्यस्त हुनगएको कुरा यहाँका वृद्ध सन्थाल महानुभावहरू तथा स्थानीय अभिभावक पनि बताउनुहुन्छ ।
हिजोआज ‘उल्लुघुटु’ भन्ने यो पुरानो नामलाई ‘सीतानगर’ भनी नाम परिवर्तन गरिएको पाइन्छ । यहाँका रैथाने आदिवासी सन्थाल समुदायका मानिसहरू पनि यस समुदायबाट बिस्तारै विस्थापित हुँदै गएको पाइन्छ र उल्लुघुटु डाँडाभन्दा लगभग दुई कि.मी. दक्षिण–पश्चिम लेटी भन्ने ठाउँमा र उत्तर कोइलीडाँगी तथा चार कि.मी. पूर्व जाम्बाडी भन्ने ठाउँमा मात्र केही स-साना सन्थाल समुदायका बस्तीहरू भेटिन्छन् । नयाँ पुस्तालाई पुरानो नाम मन नपरेकाले कुनै नयाँ नाम राखौं भनी स्थानीय बुद्धिजीवि, भद्रभलादमी, शिक्षक तथा युवाहरूको मन मिल्न जाँदा धार्मिक किसिमको साथै नारीको प्रतिक समेत हुने गरी ‘सीतानगर’ भन्ने नाम रहन गएको बुझिन्छ । यद्यपि जनजिब्रोमा अझै पनि ‘उल्लुघुटु’ नै रहेको पाइन्छ ।
तत्कालीन समयमा झोडा फडाँनी र बस्ती बाक्लिँदै जान थाल्यो । पहाडबाट मानिसहरू तराइतिर बसाईँ सरेर आउने क्रम पनि तीव्र हुँदै गयो र समुदायमा मानिसले शिक्षालयको आवश्यकता महशुस गरे । त्यसबेला सौंठा र इटहरामा केही विद्यालय त खुलेका थिए, तर नानी बाबुलाई त्यहाँसम्म जान दुरीका हिसाबले साथै बाटामा पर्ने झाडी र खोल्साले सम्भव नै थिएन । त्यसकारण गाउँका भद्र-भलादमी तथा अगुवा भेला भई विद्यालय स्थापना गर्ने चासो देखाउन थाले । त्यसै बेलादेखि श्री लेखनाथ तिम्सीनाले केही केटाकेटी जम्मा गरी सानो टहरामा पढाउन थाल्नुभयो र यसै क्रमलाई जोड्दै ग्रामीण सचेत समुदाय विद्यालय स्थापनाका लागि प्रयासरत रह्यो । कुरा वि.सं. २०३२ साल भाद्र २८ गते शनिबारका दिनको हो । आम ग्रामवासीे भेला भई विद्यालय स्थापनाका लागि छलफल गर्दे जाँदा उक्त भेलाले अन्त्यमा एउटा शिक्षाको मन्दिर स्थापना गर्ने निर्णय गर्यो र ‘श्री दिपेन्द्र प्रा.वि., उल्लुघुटु’ आफ्नो विद्यालयको नामाकरण गर्दै भेला सकियो । उक्त भेलाले विद्यार्थी जुटाइदिने वाचाका साथ श्री गोपालकुमार डाँगीलाई प्र.अ. र श्री शङ्कर के.सी.लाई शिक्षकका रूपमा नियुक्त गरी विद्यालय सञ्चालन हुन थाल्यो ।
विद्यालय सञ्चालन भएता पनि विद्यार्थी बस्ने कक्षाकोठा र भवन अबको अर्को खाँचो बन्यो । अभिभावकहरूले आफुसँग भएका काठ, मुढा, खम्बा आदि दिएर अपूर्ण किसिमको विद्यालय भवनको आकारसम्म तयार भयो । यसै क्रममा झोडाको जग्गा नापी गर्दै बसोबास कम्पनी आयो । विद्यालय रहेको ठाउँ र अन्य डाँडो भाग कसैले नरुचाएको तर विद्यालयको लागि भने उपयुक्त नै थियो । त्यसले त्यो डाँडो जग्गा र केही परतिरको अलिकति जग्गा समुदायका अगुवाको पहल र बसोबास कम्पनीका कर्मचारीको सदभावमा विद्यालयको नाममा दर्ता गरियो । त्यस्तै विद्यालयको नाममा जग्गा नापी गर्दा आफुले भवन निर्माण गर्ने वाचा गरेको, विद्यालयको स्थापनामा पनि आफ्नो अग्रणी सकृयता रहेको साथै आफू विद्यार्थी हुँदादेखि नै शैक्षिक विकासको कार्य गर्ने चाहना भएकोले विद्यालय भवन स्थापना गर्ने कुरामा आफुले लगानी गर्ने कम्मर कस्नुभयो एक शिक्षाप्रेमी श्री पदमबहादुर कटुवालले । वहाँ तत्कालिन गोविन्दपुर गाउँ पञ्चायतको उप–प्रधानपञ्च पनि हुनुहुन्थ्यो । आफ्नो निजी नाममा दर्ता भएको २ बिगाहा जग्गा बिक्रि गरेर विद्यालयको भवन बनाइदिनु भयो । विद्यालय स्थापना गर्ने अन्य सहयोगीमा प्रेमप्रसाद बिमली, गणेश घिमिरे, मोहन खड्का, खड्गबहादुर राई, प्रेमनारायण डाँगी, पुष्प लुइटेल (ठुला र साना दुबै) युवराज श्रेष्ठ, भीमबहादुर खत्री, बलराम दाहाल लगायत स्थानीय अन्य महानुभावहरूको ठुलो सहयोग रहेको बताउनु हुन्छ पदमबहादुर कटुवाल । मोरङ जिल्लाको एउटा दूर दराजमा वि.सं. २०३२ सालमा नै यो विद्यालयलाई जन्म दिने र विद्यालयको भवन निर्माण र व्यवस्थापनको लागि प्रारम्भिक चरणमै यस्तो अविष्मरणीय देन दिनु भएका स्व. पदमबहादुर कटुवाललाई स्थानीय सम्पूर्ण बुद्धिजीवि, अगुवा, भद्र–भलादमी, अभिभावक, स्थानीय निकाय प्रतिनिधि तथा शिक्षक सम्पूर्णको राय, सल्लाह, तथा छलफलबाट निजलाई वि.व्य.स.को आजीवन सदस्यता समेत प्रदान गरेको थियो ।
जब विद्यालय स्वीकृतिको लागि कार्य अगाडि बढ्यो त्यति बेला विद्यालयको नाम व्यक्तिको नाममा राख्नुभन्दा कुनै धार्मिक स्थलको नाममा राख्नु शोभनीय पनि हुने र स्वीकृतिको लागि सहज र छिटो हुने हुँदा यसै ठाउँको नजिकै पश्चिमतिर विराजमान धार्मिक तथा पौराणिक प्रतिष्ठा बोकेको सुनवर्षी महाराज थानको नामबाट यस विद्यालयको नयाँ गरिमा बोकेको नाम ‘श्री सुनवर्षी प्राथमिक विद्यालय’ राखियो ।

*** Geographical Location, Social, Economic and Historical Condition as well as Other Important Facts About Sunbarshi Secondary School, Ratuwamai-5, Morang
(A) Geographical Location
Among 7 provinces and 77 districts of Nepal, this school is located in Morang in the eastern part of the country. Morang district is one of the 14 districts of Province 1. The geography of the district extends to the Mawa and Ratuwa rivers in the east, the Budhi river in the west, the border of India (Dashgaja) in the south and to the Chure Hills in the north. This district has come a long way in the field of education, health, industry, transportation, communication and people’s development. Among one metropolis, eight municipalities and eight rural municipalities of the district, Ratuwamai Municipality is about 30 km towards the eastern direction from the district headquarters.
To the east of this municipality are Mawa and Ratuwa rivers, to the west Sunbarshi municipality, to the north lies Urlabari municipality and to the south it is bordering with neighbouring country, India. Our school, Sunbarshi Secondary School, is located in ward No. 5 of this municipality. This school was established in the year 1975 A.D. This school is located at Ullughutu Chowk, a trijunction of ward No. 5, 6 and 8 of this municipality. Despite being in this corner, this school is constantly working to satisfy the educational hunger and thirst of the people here. The Bakraha river, which is at the distance of about five hundred meters to the west of this school, flows through this ward of the municipality.

(B) Social Condition
The people from multi-ethnic group live around this school area. Brahmin, Chhetri, Rai, Limbu, Tamang, Kami, Damai, Santhal, Jogi, Newar are the main castes living here and most of them have been practicing Hinduism. The community here follows and adheres its own tradition, religion, culture, festivals, customs and values. Rejoicing with relatives, friends and neighbours at festivals, weddings, poojas, bratvandhas, picnics, etc. and having love, harmony and cooperation with each other is a good feature of this community. Mutual support and participation in times of calamity, grief or in need can also be found here.
Most of the people of the community are taking up agriculture as a profession and in recent years people have gradually started embracing the modern agricultural system. Only a few people in this locality are government employees or serving in the private sectors. The majority of the youth are found to be in foreign employment for economic gain. A few of the people have run small businesses and shops, and those with a little bit good economic status have entered the urban areas with the hope of getting more facilities there. Even well-educated people seem to be centered around the city.
Although the previous generation was lagging behind in the field of education, the present generation now seems to understand the importance of education. Children in the school age group within the school area are seen to be enrolled in the school. There is a tendency among Dalits, Janajatis and Adivasi children (mostly Santhals) not to be enrolled in school and to drop out.The number of female students seems to be higher. About 75% of the people in the community are literate and the number of people pursuing higher education is increasing day by day. Not only the sons of the family but almost all the daughters and also some of the daughter-in-laws also seem to have gone to +2 school and university. There are many settlement areas within this school catchment area which are mainly Sitanagar, Kaseni, Mildando, Koilidangi, Shantipur, Damrabhitta, Leti, Govindapur etc.
(C) Economic Condition
While talking about the economic condition of the people within the school catchment area, we find a lot of families with lower income rate. Their main source of income is traditional farming and animal husbandry. On an average, almost every family has got 1 to 1.5 bigha of land which makes it difficult for them to meet the necessities. The number of people living on daily wages is also high. In fact, some parents even seem to lack the money to buy their chlidren’s exercise books, pencils, pens, clothes and other stationery items. People with high economic status are rarely found. Some people with a little bit good economic condition have even left the place for the urban areas. As some remittances from those who have gone for foreign employment are entering many families and due to which there is some financial relief in the community at present. There are no other self-employment programs in the village. If we look at and analyse in this way, it would not be an exaggeration to say that this community is at the peak of economic hardships. Therefore, even if they want, they are unable to donate enough to meet the needs of the school here. However, the history has shown that the community did not give up, as much as possible, in economic mobilisation. But it may be difficult locally to meet all the financial challenges that the school is currently facing.
(D) Historical Condition
The ridge where the school is located was formerly covered with trees. Later, the forest was cleared and the name of this place was changed to ‘Ullughutu’. How did this place get its name ‘Ullughutu’? There are two legends about that.
1. According a kind of historical legend, earlier this ridge was full of mango orchards. In Santhal language, mango is called ‘Ul’. At that time there was a settlement of Santhal in this area. The chief of them was named ‘Gutu’. That is to say, since the head of the village with the mango orchard was ‘Gutu’ and the mango was called ‘ul’, a mixture of these two words (Ul and Gutu) has changed the name of the place as ‘Ulgutu’. Later this term got corrupted and became ‘Ullughutu’.
2. According to another legend, ‘ul’ means mango in Santhal language and ‘ghutu’ means ‘ridge’. As it was a ridge with mango orchards, the name of this place was given by the indigenous Santhals as ‘Ullughutu’ and the same name became accustomed to the vernacular.
Today, the old name ‘Ullughutu’ has been changed to ‘Sitanagar’. The people of the indigenous Santhal community are also gradually being displaced from this community and in Leti, a place about two km south-western part of Ullughutu and in a place called Koilidangi to the northern part of it and in Jambadi which is about four km towards the eastern direction, only a handful of small Santhal settlements are found today. As the new generation did not like the old name, the local intellectuals, gentlemen, teachers and youths came to agree on a new name ‘Sitanagar’. However, there is still the old name ‘Ullughutu’ in the vernacular.
At that time, the jungles were being cut down and the settlements were getting crowded. People also migrated from the Hills to the Terai. People in the community felt the need for education. At that time some schools were opened in Sauntha and Itahara, but it was not possible for small children to get there due to long distance and the bushes and streams on the way. Therefore, the gentlemen and leading figures of the village came together and started showing interest in establishing a school. From that time onwards, Mr. Lekhnath Timsina gathered some children and started teaching in a small cottage. And as its continuity, the conscious rural community tried to set up a school. It was on the 13th of September, 1975 A.D. that the general public gathered to discuss on the issue of establishing a school and the meeting finally decided to set up a shrine of education and ended by naming their school as ‘Shree Dipendra Pra.Vi., Ullughutu’. The meeting promised to collect and mobilise students and Mr. Gopal Kumar Dangi was appointed as the first Headmaster of the school, Mr. Shankar KC being its teacher. Thus the school started functioning.
Even though the school started functioning, the classrooms and the buildings were urgently needed. Parents donated wood, carpets, woden poles, etc. to shape the school building. Meanwhile, a settlement company came to survey the land. The area where the school is now located was suitable for school. This land and the land a little farther away was registered in the name of the school on the initiative of the community leaders and the goodwill of the employees of the settlement company. Similarly, the lover of education, Mr. Padma Bahadur Katuwal, promised to invest in constructing the school building. He was also the Deputy Pradhan Panch of the then Govindapur Village Panchayat. He sold two bigahas of land registered in his own name and got the school building built. Prem Prasad Bimli, Ganesh Ghimire, Mohan Khadka, Khadga Bahadur Rai, Prem Narayan Dangi and Pushpa Luitel (both), Yubaraj Shrestha, Bhim Bahadur Khatri, Balram Dahal and other local dignitaries had been very supportive, according to Padma Bahadur Katuwal. For his contribution, Mr. Padma Bahadur Katuwal had been awarded the lifelong membership of the School Management Committee.
As the work for school approval progressed, people thought it would be more appropriate to name the school after a religious site than to name after a person and also it would be easier and quicker to get the school approved. And thus the school was renamed as ‘Shree Sunbarshi Primary School’.
