Title:
"An Action Research on Low Student Attendance on the First Day after a Long School Vacation"
1. Background / Introduction
After long school vacations (such as Dashain, Tihar, or winter/summer breaks), the attendance of students on the first reopening day is usually very low. This not only affects the teaching-learning process but also weakens the discipline, planning, and regularity of the school.
To identify the real causes of this issue and find possible solutions, this action research was conducted.
2. Identification of the Problem
Main Problem:
- Student attendance on the first day after a long vacation is very low.
3. Objectives
Main Objective:
- To find out the causes of low student attendance on the first day after a long vacation and suggest possible solutions.
Specific Objectives:
- To identify the main reasons for students’ absence.
- To understand the perspectives of parents and teachers.
- To test strategies that can improve student attendance.
4. Research Questions
- Why is student attendance low on the first day after a long vacation?
- Do parents and teachers take this issue lightly?
- What measures can help increase student attendance?
5. Field and Population
Location: Sunbarsi Secondary School, Ratuwamai-5, Morang
Population: Students of Classes 6 to 12
Sample Size: 50 students, 10 teachers, and 20 parents
Study Period: From the second to the eighth day after Dashain vacation in the year 2082 B.S. (total 7 days)
6. Method and Tools
Type of Study: Action Research
Tools for Data Collection:
- Interview
- Questionnaire
- Direct Observation
7. Data Analysis
Based on the interviews and questionnaires, the major findings were:
- Many students go to visit their relatives or friends in villages and return late.
- Some students start preparing for school (washing clothes, cleaning, doing homework, buying notebooks/pens, etc.) only after school reopens.
- Parents tend to take the first day of school lightly and do not insist on attendance.
- Some students stay home due to fear of punishment for not completing homework.
8. Actions / Interventions
The following remedial actions were implemented:
- Parents were informed and made aware through notice boards and social media that students must attend school on the first day.
- A prior agreement (commitment) between teachers and students was made for “mandatory attendance on the first day.”
- The school organized entertainment programs on the first day (singing, dancing, games, prize distribution, etc.).
- Students who attended on the first day were given small “attendance rewards.”
9. Findings / Results
After implementing the above measures, during the next long vacation (Tihar-Chhath period), the following improvements were observed:
- Student attendance on the first day increased from 30% to 70%.
- Parents’ sense of responsibility towards the school improved.
- Students showed greater enthusiasm in returning to school.
10. Conclusion
The main causes of low attendance on the first day after long vacations are related to social habits, parental negligence, and students’ lack of mental readiness.
If the school provides timely information, encouragement, and a positive environment, the attendance rate can be significantly improved.
11. Recommendations
- The school should clearly notify students and parents about the reopening date before each vacation.
- The school should organize recreational programs on the first day.
- Messages about regular attendance should be sent to parents after vacations.
- There should be motivational and reward systems to encourage regular attendance among students.
Conclusion
This action research contributes to bringing practical improvement in the school. It promotes co-operation and a sense of shared responsibility among teachers, students, and parents.
