The Ring of a Phone Call
By Yagya Kumar Niraula
Abstract / Summary
In the quiet moment of a busy city morning, a man receives an unexpected phone call from a childhood friend he had long forgotten. Through their brief conversation, he is reminded that while life changes and cities grow, the essence of human connection remains timeless.
This story is about memory, migration, and the silent strength of relationships that survive across distance and time.
The Story
Even in the crowded city, the morning sun sometimes felt as calm as the one in his village.
Whenever its golden light slipped through the window, his mind wandered back - to the green fields, the stone tap, and those carefree childhood friends.
As he held his cup of coffee, lost in memories, his phone rang - an unknown number.
He froze for a moment. That name pulled him years back in time.
Sita - his classmate from the village, the one who often borrowed notebooks but never lost her smile.
“Oh, Sita ! What a surprise ! How have you been?”
“I’m fine, brother. I just couldn’t stay in the village anymore. I’m coming to the city… looking for work.”
He lowered his eyes. The city had forced too many like her into such uncertain journeys. “Sita,” he said softly, “the city is big, but you must learn to keep your heart small.”
Sita laughed gently. Within that laughter, he heard a faint tremble - a mix of fear, hope, and courage to begin again.
When the call ended, he looked down at his coffee. It wasn’t warm anymore, but the aroma was still there.
A thought stirred quietly in his heart: “Cities may change, but human connections never die - sometimes, they live on in the ring of a single phone call.”
